2011

1 February – 18 February – FeAl

Old Town based artist and sculptor Toby Robson will be showing his latest exhibition ‘FeAl’ at The Post Modern Gallery from Tuesday, February 1st to Friday February 18th 2011

Toby specialises in metal casting in aluminium and iron and has a small workshop and foundry near Devizes.

“The exhibition itself is a follow on to some work I exhibited at Belgravia Lettings last year. Some of it reflects my experiences over a very difficult couple of years, others pieces reflect my interest in organic forms, and throughout I’ve played with different casting techniques to create a range of effects and finishes. The name ‘FeAl’ is both a pun on process of creation and of the chemical symbols for my two favourite mediums.”

The exhibition serves as preparation for this summer, where Toby’s been given the chance in a lifetime lifetime offer to cast and install a large scale iron sculpture at the internationally famous Sculpture Trails outdoor museum in Solsbury, Indiana.

The Post Modern Gallery will be open from 11.00 to 4.00pm weekdays and Saturdays (private views can be arranged outside these hours by appointment). For more information, visit Toby’s blog and website at

11 – 12 May – Far Away and Nearby

An interactive photographic exhibition which looks at the complexities of time and memory in connection with landscape.

Every person’s memories are unique; an individual set of references. Memories help to shape our lives and make judgements on how we view our world; they help us to discover who we are and where we fit in. The images throughout the exhibition will be displayed so that the viewer can interact with them, discovering their own reading of the images, remembering and recalling. Viewers will have the opportunity to record and leave their own memories on postcards. These will then be displayed and become part of the exhibition, making the whole display a visual representation of memory.

Postcards were placed around the town centre during the morning of Wednesday, 11th May for the public to discover.

11 Nov – 19 Nov  Tribal

TRIBAL – A SELECTION OF TRIBAL AND CONTEMPORARY ART FROM A PRIVATE WILTSHIRE COLLECTION.

A work of art has value only in so far as it quivers with reflections of the future.

 André Breton

The works in this exhibition are part of a private collection that has been lovingly assembled over the past thirty years. To begin with our emphasis was on tribal art of Africa, but this soon spread out to include tribal works from all over the globe.

Realising that many early 20th century painters and potters had been influenced by tribal art, we began to seek out works by more contemporary artists who had also been influenced by African and Oceanic art-works.

Interestingly, many of the artists whose work we collect have been influenced by Surrealism. This is perhaps not too surprising when we realize that many of the early Surrealists, including André Breton, Tristan Tzara, Max Ernst and Man Ray, also collected tribal art.

Today we have no real idea as to how many art pieces we now have. We only know that we cannot display them all in our home and so we are pleased that others will be able to share some of them with us, if only for a short time.

One of our favourite quotations comes from the late David Kidd, a man who amassed a truly great collection of oriental art. “Having a lot of money,” he said, “and using it to buy great pieces of art on the world market – anyone can do that. Not having money, but still being able to buy great pieces – that’s fun.” And so it is!
